As a child, my mom and dad made sure we went to church
daily. That's when God started working in my heart, through the priest
reading Scripture. At that time I even desired to teach other people about
Jesus so that they could serve Him with their whole heart, too.
I still kept going to church as I grew older, but it
seemed that church became something just to go to. I no longer had a heart
for God and I started going away from Him because of peer pressure. Though
I lost my connection with God, I still knew He was real and wanted to draw
me back. I knew what I was doing was wrong.
I met Sherry when I was about 24. We had two children,
then got married. I went to university and found good employment but, in
spite of these successes, I came to a point when I said, "God, I need
you. I can't make it on my own." I asked the Lord to forgive me and
I started praying that my wife would come to know Him, too.
I was taught by my parents how to work hard. One of my
jobs was in a northern mine and I started going to a Bible study there.
Also, there were missionaries who came to our Reserve in Canoe Lake (SK)
-- Dallas and Deena Roberts. We also went to weekly meetings at Pine Ridge
Bible Camp where Carl and Naomi Epp were living at the time. We started
studying God's Word.
We were interested and were hungry for the Lord. I knew
that God's Word was the truth and I needed to understand more of what it
said. After a while a Sunday service started on our Reserve.
I later had a job travelling to different communities
fixing computers and setting up computer networks. It was a good job and,
as I met people, some would just start sharing about their lives, and I'd
get to talk to them about the Lord.
Still, in all those jobs, it seemed something was missing.
I wanted to do something more meaningful for God. Was this all God wanted
me to do? I wanted to get closer to God, too.
The thought came that maybe I should go to Bible school,
but I wondered how God would provide for my family. I'd worked all my
life, so I put that thought away. After all, we had five kids by that
time.
There was a family camp at Pine Ridge in the spring of
2003. The speaker was Jack Coy from KBI. I was reminded that I'd like to
go to Bible school, but the same questions came up about how I would
provide for my family. Then God seemed to say to me, "Where's your
faith?" Finally, I said to God, "I'll go. I'll trust
you." Since then God has provided everything for us and blessed us
through so many people.
I'm in my second year now, enjoying going deeper into God's Word. I
have had opportunities to minister to children, teens, senior citizens and
have had opportunities to preach. It's hard here, too, sometimes,
because God is working in our hearts and wants to change some things.
