I was raised in a Christian home and attended Sunday School and
church regularly, so I knew about the Lord from a young age. I remember
my grandma teaching me Christian songs and every summer, until I was
about eight years-old, we all went to a Christian family camp. By my
mid-teens, I had been thinking about Christianity for a long time, and
felt it was right and true.
Since my parents had lived it for a long time and it was a lot better
than what the world offered, I finally made my decision to follow
Christ. At that point I began to really listen in church and study my
Bible.
Most of my life I have lived around Native people. We often cared for
Dene or Cree foster kids in our home, and there were many Native people
in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where we lived. When I was in Grade 6 we
moved to the nearby community of Anzac that was surrounded by the
Gregoire Reserve. The Native kids were always coming over to play, and
one of the boys there remembered being a foster child in our home when
he was younger.
Through the witness of a Key-Way-Tin Bible Institute team that came
to our Anzac church, I decided to attend a KBI graduation, and then I
applied to attend the School. Part of Philippians 3:10 (NKJ) says, "...that
I may know Him..." My desire is to learn to daily live Christ, not
just learn more about Him, and I really appreciate that at KBI the Bible
is our textbook. In the dorm, as a single student, I learned more
valuable lessons as I saw how God was working in the lives of my
classmates.
The highlight of my first year was meeting *Missy Cote, a second-year
student from the Saulteaux Nation in Saskatchewan. Missy and I were
married June 2, 2001, and are now both continuing our education at KBI.
Our hearts' desire is to serve the Lord, possibly with NCEM. I like
speaking and sharing God's Word and Missy enjoys teaching it, so we
would appreciate prayer for our future.
One weekend a month, as part of KBI's prison ministry team, we
travel to the Ft. Saskatchewan medium security prison for a two-hour
chapel on Saturday night. We billet in homes overnight and give our
testimonies in churches on Sunday morning. After lunch, we have two
chapel services in the Edmonton Remand Centre. Then in the early evening
we have a half-hour of sports followed by a chapel service at the
Edmonton Young Offenders facility. It is a busy and hectic schedule, but
I especially enjoy sharing what the Lord has laid on my heart with the
young offenders. They still have their whole lives ahead of them and
need to start making good choices.
In the past I have worked as a welder in the "tar sands" with my
dad, making good money. Now, as we attend school, God has shown me many
times that He is real and totally able to supply all our needs. The joy
and peace of the Lord surpasses any earthly riches. Our true riches are
found in God alone and stored up in heaven for us.
*Missy's testimony appeared in the Fall 2000 Northern Lights.
